Darkness surrounds me and I find myself bitter and cold. I am no longer the cheerful person I used to be but an ice queen afraid of people, afraid of living and afraid of loving.

I am no longer the person I used to see in the mirror.

Changed and doomed to become someone else, something else, the demon inside me becoming stronger than ever.

I lost this battle and there is no more room in my heart for love, only for hatred and doubt. Perhaps it is my fault for no longer being able to see the world in all of its glory and beauty. Or perhaps now I see the world for what it truly is and I was foolish for dreaming of a better world before. Now I see the world’s true nature: cold, acrid, abandoned, careless and ignorant.

I no longer look at the stars with hope. No longer listen to music and feel a change of heartbeat. I am no longer alive.

I have failed myself, have fallen into a pit from where I can no longer rise, have fallen on my legs and twisted the bones to the verge of crushing them.

This cannot end, this cannot heal. I cannot heal nor become the person I used to be though I have tried.

Hateful pebbles fall on me, hit me hard every time I try standing up. My very soul is putrefying and my mind has grown so tired that it can no longer comprehend the words ‘happiness’ or ‘joy’…or even ‘a smile’.

I don’t know how I ended up here. Truly, I can’t remember. I can’t! No matter how hard I try. I only know this is not the place in which I used to be.

I became a stranger to myself.

…a memory,

…a wraith.

Rules that do not apply to us!

Before people start giving advice about drinking, drugs, love and whatever they think they know better, they should really take into consideration that those advises only apply to the humans and not to other creatures in this world. Let’s face it, these rules make no sense to a vampire or a werewolf, these are stupid rules and just don’t work. So if you are not human, I am sure you will agree!

  1. ‘Don’t drink and drive!’

How does this apply to a vampire? What does blood have to do with driving? It’s actually better to drive on a full stomach than to be famished behind the steering wheel. And besides, vampires don’t even need to drive. Vampires can fly. And no, the advice of ‘Don’t drink and fly!’ doesn’t make any sense either.  Complete nonsense. I think this advice should be changed to ‘Don’t drink alcohol and drive if you are a human’ and ‘Don’t drink blood from your victim while flying if you are a vampire.’ There, this makes more sense to me.

  1. ‘Stay in school! Don’t do drugs!’

Stay in school? How long should a vampire stay in school? One may look 16 but can actually be 495 years old. Should the vampire still stay in school? Has he not learned enough in his 495 years on Earth? And don’t do drugs…what drugs could a vampire possible ‘do’ that will make him feel more powerful and invincible than…a vampire?

  1. ‘No food or drink.’

This sign you usually see in certain places like museums or theater. But, it’s a very confusing sign.  If people are the food and drink, what do they mean with ‘No food or drink?’  Shouldn’t humans be forbidden from entering these places too? Should a creature that consumes people not enter such a place? Or perhaps the sign should be:  ‘Do not feed or drink from the humans inside this area.’

  1. ‘In sickness and in health, till death do us part…’

Bla bla bla! Let aside the fact that marriage vows are completely nonsense to non-humans, no vampire nor werewolf would ever want his or her partner to say these words. A human life is short so humans may afford to make such promises but…a vampire….Please let’s just change this to ‘In sickness and in health, until one of us decided to leave.’

  1. ‘No dogs allowed.’

Are they referring to dogs, the pets? Or are they just trying to insult werewolves? It’s a rather offensive rule. And what about wererats, werecats etc? It’s such a vague rule. I just don’t know what they mean by it. Perhaps they should change it to ‘No animals or therianthropy allowed.’ For those unknown to the term, therianthropy is the ability of humans to change into animals.

  1. ‘Good night, sleep tight!’

What a bloody stupid thing to say. Vampires sleep during the day. So it’s quite rude if someone wishes you a good sleep when you’ve just woken up? ‘Sleep tight’ means that the vampire should keep its wings around its body tight? Such a weird saying so I believe we need to be more considerate with our non humans in this matter.

  1. And last but not least just the word ‘Day dreaming’

For a vampire or werewolf daydreaming is basically…dreaming! Could we stop using this word having in mind that it does not apply to all of us? Call it ‘Dreaming during your awakened hours.’ Call it whatever you like but vampires do not daydream, they nightdream. That would sound quite silly to the human ear, wouldn’t it? Well, at least now they know how non-humans feel!

How about you? Do you have any other rules that do not apply to you? Please share! I’ve grown rather tired of humans making up all these stupid rules…

Mirror, mirror

When I was a child I used to love staring into mirrors. Sometimes I’d stare at the room reflecting in the mirror and I’d wonder if I could see around the corners. I wanted to detect perhaps one difference between the room I was in and the room in the mirror. Silly, is it not? As if the room I was looking at was not a reflection, but a new world, resembling ours yet not quite the same. Funny thought…or perhaps just as twisted as my mind is.

Sometimes, I feel like I am looking in the mirror and I do not recognize myself.  I stare in those eyes and I am not sure whether they are the same as ten, twenty years ago… They’ve seen things, they see things every day so those eyes cannot be the same as they used to be. They must change as life changes them.

Mirrors don’t lie, do they? They are always sincere, straightforward and perhaps even cruel; after all mirrors reveal things as they are. Yet, when I look in mirrors I sometimes see a distorted image of what reality is – a more peaceful, perfect and quiet world where there is no room for feelings, interpretations or judgment.

I read about a spell using mirrors once. I would like to share it with you.

If you eat an apple or brush your hair in front of a mirror on Halloween or at midnight,  the image of your soul mate will appear over your shoulder. I tried this a few times, but I never saw anyone. But if I had, would I have ever been able to trust mirrors again? Would I not have been scared to look in them, afraid something will appear that I may not want to see? Or would I want to stare in mirrors all day long to see a life I might never have, a past, a future, a fantasy of the world as I would want to see it?

What do you want to see when you look in the mirror?

I am not mad!

I am not mad! I am not! Haven’t you been listening to me? They are following me! Can’t you see them on the streets, in the bus how they gaze at me? Watch me? Haven’t you seen their faces? Haven’t you smelled their acid stench as they breathe so close to your face?

You haven’t? You can’t?

Then you choose not to see them.

You have made your bed.

Do not call me mad just because I have chosen to open my eyes!

They are everywhere, in every form, in every breathing thing. Yes, they can hide in the eyes of a child, the barking of a dog, the smile of a pregnant woman. They are so deceiving and their minds are oh so very twisted!

The winter days are the worst for they love the darkness, of course they do. They bathe in the pitch dark nightmares of my very own soul.

I do not sleep at night. I cannot!  It’s not safe, never safe. Not even in my own home. I lock all doors, pull all the curtains and keep the lights on in every room.

I cannot ask for help!  No one understands me. No one wants to understand me! Of course, I tried it before. I tried explaining it to my closest friends and family. They looked at me…the way they did it…I saw desperation in their eyes as they were about to cry…concerned but mostly terrified of me. But they should not fear me! I am not the one they should fear!

I stopped trying. And, I stopped telling people what was going on. I can’t trust anyone. I cannot trust this world anymore. And the saddest part is that one day you will all think, ‘poor soul, he was just mad’.

No one will know. No one will ever know what had truly happened. Nobody will ever know what they did to me.

No one will know. But, that won’t be the end.

I will become one of them. I will be the one that will haunt others, follow others, and terrify others! Perhaps I will be the one that will gaze upon you, follow you, and drive you to the edge of insanity…

And then my friend, you will have the same words biting your tongue like tiny famished grave worms:

‘I am not mad!’

Bizarre dream

I had a bizarre dream once…well I’ve had quite a few along the years but this one I was never able to forget.

I was in the middle of chaos. War broke, the world was falling apart, buildings were burning to the ground, people were running for their lives, nature was turning into ashes. All of this was happening because of a Demon. A Demon had come to Earth and it was going to create an army of undead to destroy humanity once and for all.

I was saved by a few clerics and was taken to the only place that still held a spark of light on earth: a giant castle on top of a hill. Good people lived there and they offered me shelter and food.

That night, while in my room, I saw a bright light coming towards me then falling over me. A soft voice spoke to me. It said I should be strong and start training myself. I will soon be able to fight the army of undead that the Demon had created. I felt blessed and safe. Hope was there after all.

In the next weeks I trained, I learned all the things I needed to know in order to fight evil. I studied all of the Demon’s secrets and weaknesses. I grew strong, powerful, and confident. Before I knew it, I was ready to become a leader to humanity and face the Demon and his army of creatures.

The end of my dream finds me on a battle field. I was waiting to face the Demon, self assured and knowing that good was at my side.

But, I was alone.

Where was my army?

I saw my people… they weren’t at my side but they were a bit further, standing together, frightened and terrified. I didn’t understand why I was facing them instead of standing among them to lead them into battle. And, why were they looking at me so scared?

Suddenly the ground under me started shaking. Things rose from the ground, rotten, decomposing, dead creatures. But they did not attack me as I was looking at them completely frozen. They rose from the ground then they just stood there, all looking at me as if waiting for my orders.

I then realized it.

I was…their commander.

All this time…it wasn’t God who had spoken to me. It was the Demon himself.  He had tricked me into thinking that I was going to fight evil. I had been trained to destroy the Earth.

The army of the undead stared at me, their rotten bloody eyes watching me with…admiration. I looked at the army of humans looking at us. Fire rose around us all.

Then the dream ended.

I remember that morning waking up with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Gypsy magic

Of all the magic I have heard of in my entire life and, I have heard of quite a few, I must say that Gypsy magic is one of the arts that scare me the most.

Gypsies are of course famous for their abilities in future telling, palm reading, scrying etc. But they are mostly feared when it comes to curses. Their curses can be terrifying, horrible…deadly. You don’t believe me?

Here are three stories about the kind of curses a gypsy can set. Who told me about these stories? My very own grandmother.

  1. Mercury/quicksilver incantations.

Do you remember when your parents kept you away from thermometers when you were a child and if one broke there was panic? Well, it’s because as we all know mercury is highly poisonous. Imagine this: gypsies who control mercury.

My grandma and people in the country side call mercury the ‘living silver’. She told me that once when she was young she saw mercury marbles going down the road, in a certain direction. Gypsies could create spells ordering mercury to kill a target. The mercury follows the victim and unnoticed, penetrates the person’s footwear reaching the foot, poison taking hold of the body. By the time the victim realizes what happened…

  1. Cursed frog.

Yup, never underestimate a frog when it’s standing at your threshold, especially if this frog has a peculiar color. Gypsies can use frogs as bringers of diseases or misery. The Gypsy sends the frog to the victim. If the frog enters the house then the victim will be cursed with a horrid disease or a sudden disaster.

  1. Playing with fire.

One day when you’re least expected, you might just burst into flames. Yes, Gypsies are experts for playing with fire. In this case, they can start a fire without even using matches. Some people just burst into flames without even being near a fire. The reason? A gypsy cursed them, either out of personal gain or because someone paid them to do the deed.

Spooky stories or hidden truths?

You decide!

Stalera and the Diamond Witch – Chapter 5

She cleared her throat while approaching him.

‘I haven’t introduced myself properly. My name is Mirabella, the Queen of the Diamonds but I am about to become the most powerful Queen of all times! It is time for all the kingdoms in all the worlds to start listening to me. Finally, I am in control and I decide whether it’s dark or light, cold or warm, freezing or hot! I decide everything while you and your meaningless family will rot in a dungeon. Unfortunately, I can’t kill you as that would disturb the universe. So I can’t kill the Sun, the Moon and Tempera but I can use their power to do whatever I want. And now my darling, it is time for you to join your family and let the real leader take over.’

‘Witch!’ Stalera drew his sword.

He tried to strike her but she was faster. She hit him with a powerful rain storm, obviously a power stolen from his brother. He quickly parried and attacked again but she protected herself with ice and then she hit him with a sand storm.

Stalera was a powerful man but the witch was using his parents and his brother’s powers. She paralyzed him with a lightning bolt. Then she created a hole in the Sky Kingdom.

‘If you want to be stubborn, I will send you to Earth. There you will see how they treat stubborn boys. But, if you accept me as your Queen, I might let you join your family in the dungeon!’

‘Never, witch!’

Stalera noticed a medallion around the witch’s neck. It was made of diamonds and it was glowing. She said she was the Queen of the Diamonds. Perhaps the medallion was important to her?

‘Look down, Stalera!’ she said. ‘That is your new home! You are going there, my love. I am sending you far away, to die alone, desperate and scared among those who will never understand your nature!’

The witch pushed Stalera down the hole. But with one last effort, Stalera reached for the witch’s necklace and as he fell, he pulled down the necklace. The necklace broke, all the diamond stones falling down with Stalera which infuriated the witch.

‘You fool! I will destroy you for that! I will make you collect all the diamonds and put them back together! Your path is cursed wherever you go!’ she shouted as he was falling down.

Poor Stalera, not only was he sent to a world he did not know, the witch was going to make his life miserable. But, the question was, why did the witch care so much for the diamonds? And, was there a way to collect all the pieces? But how was Stalera ever going to find his way back home and save his family?

Stalera and the Diamond Witch – Chapter 4

Fear struck him for he realized the glow was gone. Indeed, all gone! This meant that his mother and father were in danger, worse, the Earth was in danger!

Stalera felt guilty and betrayed but he knew he had to trust Miera. But perhaps curiosity took over and she made a mistake? Or, maybe his parents wanted to show her how it all worked and something went wrong?

Tempera, he thought. Perhaps Tempera knows what is happening.

‘Tempera!’ shouted Stalera while he headed his brother’s room. But his brother’s room was also empty!

Where was everyone?

What was happening?

The night turned into day and then night again. How could that be? Who was doing this? His mother? His father?

Suddenly it was snowing, then it was raining while the sun was powerfully shinning. Who could explain all of this?

Confused and alone, Stalera left the castle to ask for help from his people. But the Stars were gone! So were the Clouds!

He felt alone, desperate and lost because he needed help but no one was there to guide him. No one. Though, when he came back to the castle, on the doorstep, someone was waiting for him.

‘Stalera, my love!’ she shouted.

‘Miera!’ He ran towards his wife, happy to see someone at last. ‘Thank the Skies you are unharmed.’

But Miera did not seem happy to see him.

He looked at her. Yes, she was his wife indeed but she was so different. For instance, her rainbow hair was now black and white while her cherry lips were now pale and icy. And her eyes had turned dark grey while her face…

‘Miera? What is happening?’

‘Nothing, love.’ Even her voice was cruel and cold.

‘Where are my parents? And where is Tempera?’

Miera laughed. It was a laughter that made the entire castle tremble.‘You pitiful little creature! Oh, how in love I am with you, Stalera! Oh, darling, kiss me then love me and hug me! Bah! But I must admit, I was very good at pretending. And, you fell for me like a… star!’ she laughed.

‘Who are you? Why are you doing this?’

Stalera and the Diamond Witch – Chapter 3

She smiled at him, her cheeks so sweet that even the roses stared at her.

‘All right,’ said Stalera, ‘you are part of the family now so you might as well know. They keep their glow in a box under their bed. They are not allowed to open it at the same time as the power of the two might blind the Earth Kingdom.’
‘How do they open the box?’

‘The box can be opened with the silver medallion that my mother wears and with the golden ring that my father wears.’

‘How sweet,’ she added as she smiled at him shyly.

‘Now, I believe I deserve a kiss,’ he answered as embraced his wife and kissed her so passionately that all the roses blushed.

Stalera had just told his wife a powerful secret. But she was his wife and she deserved to know, did she not?

Well, Stalera found out soon enough the consequences of his action.

One night Stalera heard screams. He realized his beloved wife was not in his chamber.

His worries grew stronger. He picked up his sword and ran to where the screaming came. Someone was in danger, he thought.

He realized the screams were coming from upstairs, where his parents slept! And so, he hurried up the stairs as the screaming continued.

He reached the bedroom of his parents and he found the door locked.

He could not enter so he broke the door.

No one was there!

‘Mother? Father? Miera?’ Stalera shouted.

He walked with caution in the bedroom, danger could be hiding in any corner. But, he continued calling out their names.

The bedroom was just as beautiful as it has always been. The furniture and walls were golden and glittering just as his father liked it while the floor was dark blue with shining stars representing his mother’s favorite place.

But wait…something was wrong.

He looked beside the silk bed. The box!

The box was open and empty!

Stalera and the Diamond Witch – Chapter 2

Before him stood a beautiful girl. And, what a girl! Her hair was long and colorful as the rainbow, her eyes were green as a freshly grown clover and her lips were as red as a cherry.

‘May I help you?’ she asked while her voice was like a melody.

‘I..I…’ Our young man was lost in words because he had never seen such beauty. And to make it even more complicated, he had never thought of what words to say if he had ever seen one.

‘I am lost,’ he finally said.

‘That’s all right. Luckily you found me. Please, come inside, tell me about your home and I will guide you back.’

Once inside the house, Stalera refused to leave without the girl by his side.

And so, in only one month Stalera married the beautiful girl, named Miera.

The wedding was breathtaking. His parents made their appearance at the same time. After that, his brother was awake for seven months while the Clouds danced and sang, the Stars shone as powerfully as they could and last but not least, the Earth Kingdom was amazed and happy to see such an event take place.

They lived happily for many months.

Until one day…

Stalera was watching Miera pluck some roses in the garden of the Dawn. Then, she looked at him.

‘You love me, don’t you?’ she asked.

‘Yes, I love you with all my heart.’

‘You would do anything for me?’

‘You would tell me anything?’

‘Anything, my love!’

‘Where do your parents keep their glow?’

‘Why do you want to know such a thing?’ he asked.

‘I have always wondered how they do it. For instance, how can the Sun be so bright all the time while the Moon can be so dark and mysterious?’

‘It’s their secret, I must say,’ added Stalera. He knew of course where his parents kept their magical glow. But, he also knew how much his parents counted on his trust to never tell anyone about their wonders.

‘But you said you’d tell me everything,’ said Miera almost crying.

‘I did, didn’t I?’
